Old Masters

The works shown are illustrative reference examples — public-domain museum works representing the categories and calibre Scion advises on. They are not offered for sale; available works are presented to clients by enquiry.

Old Masters denotes European painting from roughly the early Renaissance through the close of the eighteenth century — a period in which workshop practice, patronage, and copying were routine, and attribution is correspondingly harder-won. Scion evaluates these works primarily through documented provenance and technical examination, since stylistic attribution alone is rarely sufficient at this remove. We look for a clear, sourced ownership history, condition consistent with age and material, and — where attribution is proposed — corroboration from recognized scholarship or a relevant catalogue raisonné.
