Hans Holbein the Younger painted this portrait of the Cologne merchant Hermann von Wedigh III in 1532, during his second English sojourn, when he was working extensively for the community of German merchants based in London. The sitter is identified by an inscription and by a signet ring, and the meticulous rendering of the fur collar and papers on the ledge reflects Holbein's characteristic fusion of Netherlandish precision with a restrained, almost austere sense of design. Executed in oil and gold on oak, the panel entered the collection through the Edward S. Harkness bequest of 1940. For Scion, a securely identified sitter paired with a fully documented collection history is close to the ideal case: attribution, subject, and provenance all corroborating one another.
