A companion to a charcoal sheet of the same subject, this graphite Cubist Study of a Head by Elemér de Kóródy, made around 1913, works the same faceted, Cubist-derived vocabulary in a lighter, more linear register suited to the drier medium. Seen together, the two studies offer a small but legible record of how the artist tested a single compositional idea across different materials, a working method more commonly documented for better-known Cubist figures. Executed on paper, the drawing entered the collection through the gift of Martin Birnbaum in 1959, the same source and year as its companion sheet. Scion regards paired works of this kind, corroborating one another's date and origin, as a useful check against the uncertainty that can otherwise attach to minor draftsmen.
