Egon Schiele's Seated Nude in Shoes and Stockings, drawn in charcoal in 1918, the year of his death, shows the angular contour and psychologically unguarded pose typical of his figure studies, executed with an economy of line that leaves the paper largely bare around the seated form. The retention of shoes and stockings against an otherwise unclothed figure was a recurring device in Schiele's late nudes, sharpening rather than softening the picture's directness. On paper, the drawing entered the collection through the bequest of Scofield Thayer in 1982, more than six decades after it was made. Scion's assessment of works on paper from this period places particular weight on documented condition and light exposure, given the material's inherent sensitivity relative to oil on canvas.
