Vilhelm Hammershøi painted Moonlight, Strandgade 30 between 1900 and 1906, one of many interior views he made of his Copenhagen apartment, rendered here in the muted grays and pale blues that define his restrained, almost silent pictorial language. The empty room, lit obliquely by moonlight through an unseen window, exemplifies Hammershøi's preference for atmosphere and structure over narrative incident, a sensibility that has drawn renewed art-historical attention to Danish painting of this period. Oil on canvas, the work entered the collection relatively recently, through a purchase supported by the European Paintings Funds and a gift from Annette de la Renta in 2012. Scion notes that a documented purchase, with clearly recorded funding sources, offers the same evidentiary strength as an older bequest.
