Etruscan Vase with Flowers, painted in tempera on canvas between 1900 and 1910, finds Odilon Redon working in a less common medium for him, tempera's matte, chalky finish giving the floral arrangement a slightly different surface quality than his oils or pastels of the same period. The Etruscan-form vase anchors an otherwise loosely handled composition, offering a fixed structural element against which the flowers' color is allowed to expand. The picture has an unusually well-documented institutional path: acquired through the Maria DeWitt Jesup Fund in 1951 from the Museum of Modern Art's Lillie P. Bliss Collection. Scion regards inter-institutional transfers of this kind, where one museum's own acquisition record precedes another's, as offering an especially robust form of documented provenance.
