Gustav Klimt's portrait of Mäda Primavesi, painted in 1912–13 when the sitter was a child of the prominent Viennese banking family, is among the artist's most celebrated portraits of a young subject, its patterned, ornamental ground and confident, direct pose reflecting the Vienna Secession aesthetic Klimt helped define. The near life-size scale and the sitter's assured stance depart from conventional child portraiture of the period, giving the picture an authority usually reserved for adult sitters. Oil on canvas, the work entered the collection through the gift of André and Clara Mertens in 1964, made in memory of Jenny Pulitzer Steiner.
