Woman Having Her Hair Combed, worked in pastel around 1886–88 on light green wove paper that has since discolored to a warm gray, shows Edgar Degas at his most physically direct: the model's head is pulled taut by an attendant's comb in a pose that dispenses with classical grace in favor of candid, almost clinical observation of the body in motion. The paper's affixment to its original pulpboard mount, and the visible shift in its color over time, are themselves part of the object's documented condition history. The pastel entered the collection through the H. O. Havemeyer bequest of 1929. Scion's due-diligence process treats such condition notes, however small, as part of the full record that supports a work's long-term value.
